When you take a look at Mike Chilton, the first few things that come to mind are probably "generic Disney action cartoon protagonist", and in a way, you're right! Mike is the Big Damn Hero of the show, leader of the Motorcity cast, weilds an awesome weapon, and has quite a bit of charm and charisma to spare. However, this is only just scratching the surface of his character. There's a lot more to him than meets the eye!

"Chilton's giving Motorcity hope... and hope is a dangerous thing."

Mike's past as a KaneCo cadet is a good place to start on his development. When he joined Abraham Kane's forces, he did so thinking that he would be protecting the people of Detroit Deluxe. Although KaneCo is a  company that strips citizens of all personal freedom and is lead by a regular megalomaniac, it's true intentions are an extremely well-kept secret. Mike isn't a bad person at heart, and if he had known from the beginning what Kane's plans for the city were, he would have never associated with him. The moment that he learned of Kane's true hostility and indifference towards innocent people, he rebelled against his orders and went to protect the people of Motorcity -- the small glimmer of freedom that Detroit still had.

"Down here in Motorcity, we've got a motto; 'live fast, live free'."

One could say that Motorcity's motto fits Mike's characteristics quite well. He definitely strives for a free lifestyle, not only for himself but for the entire city of Detroit. To keep that peace and freedom, Mike is always willing to put up a tough fight -- even if it means taking big risks. But despite being a risk-taker and a fighter for his city, Mike is by no means a loose canon. If he can, he will always resort to solving conflict with words before violence. He's not meek, but as long as it doesn't involve KaneCo or endangering those that he cares about, it takes a lot for him to get really angry.

Mike is quick on his feet and almost always keeps a cool head, even in potentially fatal situations. As a leader, this gives him the ability to assemble his team, calm down Chuck (he freaks out a lot), and make a plan of action that almost always works. Almost.

He also likes fast cars.

"Come on, guys, my body just reacted on it's own! I'm wired for action -- always ready to go!"

Remember what I said about Mike being a risk-taker and getting angry about KaneCo? Well, those two things combined do not make a very rational Mike. Although he is without a doubt a good leader, Mike is still only 17 years old. He's definitely not grown up, and teenage boys his age tend to be a little impulsive.

In "The Duke of Detroit Presents...", he's also seen to not take boredom well at all. A long period of not having any action gets him impatient and a little restless. And his plans... I said they almost always work. I say that because sometimes when he formulates the Burner's plan of action, he doesn't think it completely through. One of those times was in the very first episode - the idea to lure the KaneCo bots attacking them into shooting each other was great, but it still left one bot for them to finish off.

Another weakness that he has been shown to have is that he's a little too protective. As the leader and a past member of KaneCo, Mike feels that it's his responsibility to use the knowledge he has to keep his teammates safe... even though they are fully capable of taking care of themselves. This sometimes leads to him getting in the way, even though his intentions are good. Mike may be a leader by nature, but he still has a lot to learn.

"Things are getting crazy out there. I can't take any chances, all right? I just... I don't know what I would do if something happened to you guys."

If you haven't already seen by now, despite Mike's "bad boy" appearance, he's actually quite modest and considerate of others. This is demonstrated throughout the series, but two instances with Chuck and Julie respectively stand out. In Chuck's case, in "Ride of the Fantasy Vans", laughing at the fact that his best friend had a pretty nerdy hobby (LARPing) never even crossed his mind. Instead, he accepted and even willingly went along with the swing of things, despite not knowing much about it at all. He made the effort to at least try to memorize the speech to pass on the "King" rank he had accidentally received and gave it back to Chuck. He could have easily acted in a similar manner as Texas and laughed at Chuck and his LARPer friends and not make any effort at all.

In the case of Julie, in "Off the Rack" she was convinced that she had to prove to herself and the other team memebers that she really was a Burner and could take imitative in the fight against Kane. This prompted her to want to go off and destroy an entire drone factory on her own, which could be extremely dangerous. Mike tries to stop her, but does not make any move to force her into changing her mind or tell her that her idea is impossible. He respected the fact that it was her decision to make, but did voice his concerns about the plan not being safe. The well-being of Mike's friends is always a top priority for him, but at the same time he avoids giving any actions that would push them into doing something they had their minds set against.

All in all, Mike Chilton is very much like the animal his car is named after -- a bit reckless, but fiercely loyal and caring to his allies. In fandom, he's been very often dubbed the "Team Mom" of the Burners. He's put the safety of his friends above his own on more than one occasion, and even when they aren't fighting Kane's bots, Mike is always there to lend an ear, a helping hand, or a piece of advice to someone that needs it.
